Photoelectric Diffuse Sensors
Photoelectric diffuse proximity sensors detect objects directly in front of them by the detecting the sensor's own transmitted light reflected back from an object's surface.
- Diffuse Sensing Mode: Light from the emitter strikes a surface of an object at some arbitrary angle and is diffused from the surface at all angles. The object is detected when the reciever captures some small percentage of the diffused light. Also called the direct reflection mode or the photoelectric proximity mode.
- Background Suppression: Photoelectric proximity sensors with background suppression operate on the basis of the geometric relation between the sending and receiving elements. The sensor is set to detect an object lying on the plane of the sensing range. Signals from objects located behind the set sensing range plane are suppressed. The result is unparalleled detection reliability and ambient light immunity for small, transparent, or reflective objects in the area close to the machine – even with varying brightness or color contrasts.
- Background Blanking: For photoelectric proximity switches, background blanking is achieved either electronically or optically. In the optical method, the angle between the sender and receiver light beam is adjusted while setting the scanning distance to the object. Objects are detected at the point where the emitted beam is reflected back directly to the receiver element. Anything lying below this point remains undetected as no light or too light, reaches the receiver element.
- Energetic: The energetic photoelectric proximity sensor with adjustable sensitivity is the simplest photoelectric proximity sensor variant. A light-colored surface reflects more light than a dark one, so it can be detected at a greater distance. Detecting a dark object against a light background is a challenge for energetic sensors. The object is obscured by the brighter background due to its higher reflectivity. Light-colored objects against dark backgrounds are easier to detect.
