Moving from Obsolescence to Compliance and Reliability

End User: An East Coast Manufacturer
Problem: Obsolete Parts, NFPA Compliance
Solution: Upgrade with NFPA compliant products
A longtime customer began facing delivery challenges when the combustion products they depended on were approaching obsolescence.
Their process heat burner application was not in compliance with NFPA because standard flame scanners were still in use, rather than the required self-check scanners. Staffing limitations also made it difficult for the customer to tackle the upgrades on their own.
After learning more about the NFPA requirements, the customer implemented Fireye SB series with UV self-check scanners, particularly because of their straightforward retrofit for smaller burners.
With more than 25 furnaces with about 10 burners on each, the scale of the project was substantial, so the customer rolled out the solution in phases. Their initial purchase covered six furnaces. Then, additional orders were placed until all furnaces were retrofitted. Several thermal oxidizers with multiple burners were also upgraded during the process, much in the same way as the furnaces.
The customer has been satisfied with the improved compliance and safety of the new equipment, along with the reliable support during installation and commissioning. Ongoing work now focuses on tuning furnaces for efficiency and planning reliability upgrades, including the addition of flow meters and air control valves.
