Z Axis
The Vertical axis in any three-dimensional coordinate system.

Zero Balance
With transducers like strain gauges, the output is large compared to the changes caused by the strain. Setting a zero balance subtracts an offset (actually a fraction of the bridge excitation voltage), so the changes caused by the strain can be accurately measured.

Zero Cross
Action that provides output switching only at or near the zero-voltage crossing points of the AC sine wave.  Also known as Zero Switching

Zero Shift
shift in the instrument calibrated span evidenced by a change in the zero value. Usually caused by temperature changes, overrange, or vibration of the instrument.
